How we check what we publish
Two things matter here: where the facts come from, and how the text around them is written. We answer both plainly, including the part most publications leave out.
Where facts come from
Numbers are computed from open datasets — bathymetry, elevation, OpenStreetMap geometry, climate normals, routing. Nothing is copied from another travel site. Every computed value carries a confidence score, and values below our threshold go to a human for confirmation before they are used.
How the text is produced
Content on this site is produced by our editorial system: facts are computed from the sources described in our methodology, text is generated from those facts by a language model, and every page is checked before publication against twenty-eight automated rules — among them that every number in the text exists in the underlying data, that no quotation is attributed to anyone we did not source, and that no first-person account of visiting a place appears anywhere.
We say this openly because the alternative is pretending otherwise. What we do not do is invent authors, fabricate travel diaries or attach names to text those people did not write.
Corrections
When a figure turns out to be wrong, it is corrected and the correction is recorded in the changelog with its date. Silently editing a page is not a correction.
